::::::::::::::::::::::::=- THE STORY -=::::::::::::::::::::::::
In ages long past, the mystics of Ac`Rianed realized their powers
were dwindling, and the art of the Magi was quickly being forgotten.
The life energy of their world, which fueled their magic, was slowly
drained by some unknown, yet terrible force. The people of
Ac`Rianed were wasting away, while the mystics felt powerless to
protect them.
Thus is was that the mystics came together and crafted their rings -
a set of artifacts in which they could store their remaining power.
Each mystic fashioned a set of rings from a distinctive material,
and whenever two or more of these similar rings were brought
together, the power within them could be harnessed. By separating
the rings into different patterns and then reassembling them,
different aspects of that power could be called upon.
But it was not enough to simply store this power in the rings. New
apprentices had to be trained, lest the secret of the rings be
forgotten and the world fall into ruin. Thus was created a special
training board upon which novice users of the rings could safely
practice their assembly. Only by successfully completing this
training can the apprentice hope to restore peace to Ac`Rianed, and
command the Rings of the Magi...
::::::::::::::::::::::=- INTRO/STORY -=::::::::::::::::::::::::
When the game loads, an introduction and story sequence is
displayed. The intro/story consists of a number of short scenes,
each of which remains on screen for a short while before advancing
to the next scene. You may advance to the next scene more rapidly
by pressing a key or clicking a mouse button. You may also bypass
the intro/story sequence completely by pressing the [Esc] key at any
time.

any order that you desire. After successfully completing a board,
the game will automatically select the next board for you when you
return to the board selection screen, however you may manually
select a different board.
In the upper left corner of the screen is the board preview display
area, where a miniature representation of the game board is
displayed. As you select from among the game boards, this display
will change to reflect the currently selected board. If you have
already solved the currently selected board at least once it will be
surrounded by a glowing red border. You may, however, replay a
board that you have previously solved if you wish to attempt to
improve your score on that board.
Just below the board preview display area is displayed your current
best score for this particular board, as well as your total score
for this game.

ordering section for information about the full Grand Master Edition
of Rings of the Magi.
:::::::::::::::::::=- PLAYING THE GAME -=::::::::::::::::::::::
The object of the game is to remove all of the colored rings from
the game board. Once all the rings have been removed from a
particular board, that puzzle is considered completed and you may
move on to the next puzzle.
Rings are removed from the game board whenever two or more rings of
the same color come into direct contact with each another. The
rings cannot be moved directly, but are affected by arrow buttons
located throughout the game board. Arrow buttons indicate the
direction in which they will exert their force. When an arrow
button is pressed, all the rings in the indicated row or column will
move one step in the indicated direction, unless blocked or hidden
behind a solid object.
Ring movement may be blocked by a solid wooden game piece, or by an
arrow button, or by another ring if that ring is itself blocked by
some solid object. Additionally, a ring may be blocked by the edge
of the game board itself - it is not possible to push a ring off the
edge of the game board.
Button Keyb. Shortcut Function
-------- ----------- ---------------------------------------
undo U Pressing the "undo" button will restore
the game board to the state it was in
before the most recent ring movement.
Only the most recent movement can be
undone. If your score changed during
the most recent move, it is also
restored to its previous value.
solve S Pressing the "solve" button allows you
to view one of the possible solutions
for this puzzle. A bright green outline
will surround the "solve" button while
the solution is in progress. The game
board will then be restarted and the
arrow buttons will be automatically
pressed to solve the puzzle. You may
interrupt the solution at any time by
pressing a mouse button or the [Esc] key.
restart R Pressing the "restart" button will
restore the game board to its original
configuration. Your score will also be
reset to the value it had when this board
was selected.
quit Q Pressing the "quit" button allows you to
[Esc] leave this game board without completing
the puzzle. A message window pops up on
screen asking if you wish to exit before
completing the current board. If you
wish to resume play, select "No". If
you wish to exit and return to the board
selection screen, select "Yes".
Alt-R Pressing the Alt-R combination will
begin record mode for board solution
macros. Record mode allows you to create
your own automatic solutions for the
custom game boards you have created. A
bright red outline will surround the
solve button while recording is in
progress. You may cancel Record mode by
pressing Alt-R again. Pressing the
"solve," "restart" or "quit" buttons also
cancels Record mode before performing the
requested action. Pressing the "undo"
button does not cancel Record mode, as an
undo can be recorded into the solution
macro.

[F9] Toggle sound effects on/off.
[F10] Toggle music on/off.
Alt-S Manually activate the screen saver.
Scoring
-------
Points are awarded as the rings are matched up and removed from the
game board. Additional points are awarded for simultaneously
removing several rings with a single movement. The following table
explains the scoring:
Number of Rings
Matched/Removed Score
--------------- -----
2 40
3 90
4 160
5 250
6 360
etc.
Recovering From A Bad Move
--------------------------
It is possible to move a ring or match up several rings in such a
way as to make the game board impossible to solve. If this happens
you should immediately try "undo"-ing your last move. If you do not
"undo" that move, and continue playing, you may receive a warning
message indicating that the game board cannot be solved. This
message will only appear if the game board cannot be solved AND the
"undo" version of the game board also cannot be solved. You will be
asked if you wish to restart this board. If you select "yes" the
board will be reset to its initial state and you may try to solve it
again. If you select "no" the board will remain in its current
state and you may continue to play the board as is, although it will
not be possible to actually solve the puzzle. You may also restart
the game board manually at any time by pressing the "restart"
button.
Screen Saver
------------
After five minutes of inactivity (no key presses or mouse presses)
the playing screen will switch to a screen saver display in order to
save wear and tear on your monitor. Simply move the mouse, press a
key, or press a mouse button in order to restore the playing screen.
::::::::::::::::::=- COMPLETING A GAME -=::::::::::::::::::::::
Completing a game board
-----------------------
Upon completion of each game board, one of the Mystics of Ac`Rianed
will appear and deliver a message regarding your performance. You
may press any key or a mouse button to advance through this message
more rapidly.
Completing all of the game boards within a difficulty level
-----------------------------------------------------------
Upon completion of each complete level, you will be awarded one of
the symbolic finger rings which indicate the status of a Ring
Master. Once you have collected all four finger rings you will have
truly earned the title "Ring Master." You may then command the Rings
of the Magi, and help restore peace to the people of Ac`Rianed.
Congratulations!
:::::::::::::::::::::=- HIGH SCORES -=:::::::::::::::::::::::::
If your current total score qualifies you for inclusion in the high
scores roster, you will be prompted to enter your name upon the
roster before you return to the main menu. A glowing red border
will surround the slot in which your high score will be stored.
Enter your name using the keyboard, then press [Enter] or use the
mouse to press the "done" button to proceed.
To clear the entire high scores roster, use the mouse to press the
"clear" button.
::::::::::::::::::=- CONFIGURATION MENU -=:::::::::::::::::::::
Clicking on the "config" button from the main menu will display a
sub-menu from which you may adjust several parameters affecting the
game. These parameters include the volume of sound effects and
music, the rate at which the solve feature operates, and whether or
not the intro sequence is displayed when the program is started.
These configuration settings will be automatically saved to disk so
that they will remain in effect the next time that you play Rings of
the Magi.
Sound Effects And Music
-----------------------
Sound effects may be completely disabled by clicking on the button
labelled "fx". A red circle with a slash through it indicates that
sound effects have been disabled. You may re- enable sound effects
by pressing this button again. Music may be enabled/disabled in the
same manner by clicking on the button labelled with a musical note
symbol.
The volume of the sound effects may be adjusted by clicking on the
two arrows just to the right of the "fx" button. Clicking on the
left "<-" button will decrease the volume, while the right "->"
button will increase the volume. The indicator labelled "VOL" will
move left or right to reflect the volume changes you have made. The
music volume may be changed in the same manner by clicking on the
buttons just to the right of the musical note button.
Solve Speed
-----------
The rate at which the automatic solve feature operates may be
increased or decreased by clicking on the two arrow buttons just to
the right of the "solve speed" label. Clicking on the left
"tortoise" button will decrease the solve speed, while clicking on
the right "gazelle" button will increase the solve speed. The
indicator labelled "<->" will move left or right to reflect the
changes you have made.
Intro On/Off
------------
The intro and story sequence which is displayed at the beginning of
the program may be disabled by clicking on the button labelled "I".
A red circle with a slash through it indicates that the intro has
been disabled. (Disabling the intro will also disable the "thunder
and lightning" effect that appears when the title screen is
displayed.) You may re-enable the intro sequence by pressing button
again.
::::::::::::::::=- LOAD/SAVE GAME MENU -=::::::::::::::::::::::
Clicking on the "load/save" button from the main menu will display a
sub-menu from which you may either save the current game or load a
previously saved game. A saved game remembers all your individual
board scores, as well as your total score and the level/board that
you are currently playing. There are sixteen "slots" in which games
may be saved. The currently active slot is indicated by a glowing
red border. The scroll buttons along the left side of the menu will
allow you to scroll forward or backward through the list of saved
game slots.
Saving A Game
-------------
Click the mouse on the game slot in which you wish to save the
current game. A glowing red border will now surround that slot.
Next, click the mouse on the "save" button. A glowing red underline
cursor will appear within the chosen game slot, prompting you to
enter a descriptive name by which this saved game can be identified.
Use the keyboard to enter a name for the game. The backspace key
may be used to remove characters from a previously entered name.
Once the name has been entered, press the [Enter] key or click the
mouse again on the "save" button to save the game. The game will be
saved immediately, and you will be returned to the main menu.
Loading A Game
--------------
Click the mouse on the game slot which contains the previously saved
game that you wish to load. A glowing red border will now surround
that slot. Next, click the mouse on the "load" button. The game
will be loaded immediately, and you will be taken directly to the
board selection screen where you may continue your game.
Canceling A Load/Save
----------------------
If you decide that you do not wish to either load or save a game,
simply click the mouse on the "cancel" button. You will be returned
to the main menu, and may continue your existing game.

Mouse
-----
You must have a mouse to play Rings of the Magi. You must also have
a mouse driver properly loaded before starting the program. This is
typically accomplished by loading either MOUSE.SYS, MOUSE.COM or
MOUSE.EXE during boot-up, although the driver may often be loaded
manually by simply typing "MOUSE" at the command line.
Memory
------
Rings of the Magi requires approximately 512K free conventional RAM
in order to run. If there is insufficient memory, you may try
removing unneeded TSR's or device drivers from memory.
BLASTER environment variable
----------------------------
Rings of the Magi will attempt automatically to detect your sound
hardware. The vast majority of sound cards can be detected by this
method. However, if you find that Rings of the Magi fails to detect
your sound card, you may use the BLASTER environment variable to
provide additional information about your sound card to the
auto-detect routine. The following command will set the BLASTER
environment variable:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1
Where the number following the "A" is the address of your sound
card. The number following the "I" is the interrupt level, and the
number following the "D" is the DMA channel used. You must be
certain that the values you specify are correct for your particular
setup.
SETUP program
-------------
If you are still experiencing sound problems after having tried
setting the BLASTER environment variable, you may try using the
SETUP program. The SETUP program will interactively prompt you for
the correct parameters for your sound card, then test those
parameters and write out a setup file to disk.
To start the SETUP program, simply type "SETUP" from the command
prompt and press [Enter]. Then use the arrow keys and the [Enter]
key to navigate through the menus. First, you must configure your
sound card. Then, you should test that both music and sound effects
and working properly. If so, you should save those parameters and
exit the program. If not, you may need to try again; re-configure
your sound card and test it until both music and sound effects work
properly.
If the program completes successfully it should have saved a file
named "SETUP.DAT" on your disk. This file describes your sound
hardware to Rings of the Magi. The parameters you specified for
your sound card will now be used instead of the auto-detect routine
within Rings of the Magi.
Windows
-------
Rings of the Magi makes extensive use of your computer's memory,
video and sound hardware. For these reasons it is not recommended
that you run the program from Windows. However, there are certain
steps you can take to improve the program's performance under
Windows.
If you experience sound or music problems when running Rings of the
Magi from Windows, it may be necessary to create a "PIF" file in
order to inform Windows of the resources which it must allocate in
order for the program to run. In particular, you may need to grant
exclusive execution to Rings of the Magi in order for it to assume
control of your sound hardware.
If you experience video or memory problems, there are additional
fields within the "PIF" file that will allow you to grant both more
main memory and more control over the video hardware to Rings of the
Magi. In particular, you may need to set Video Memory to "High
Graphics" and set Memory Requirements/KB Required to at least "512".
The PIF Editor program, typically located in the Main program group,
will allow you to create this "PIF" file. Check your Windows
documentation for more information on creating "PIF" files.
